Introduction
Firemaster Expanding Felt
607 is a flexible insulating felt product manufactured
from Firemaster 607 alkaline earth silicate
fibre together with a small amount of organic
binder and a special additive which produces
an immediate expansion in thickness on exposure
to heat.
Firemaster Expanding Felt
will immediately expand up to three times its
original thickness on heating making it ideal
for any application where assured fire protection
is required under conditions of movement. Typical
applications are construction joint sealing
and penetration seals. The product has been
extensively fire tested for vertical and horizontal
movement joint fire protection for periods
up to five hours without loss of integrity.
Advantages:
- No intumescent
reaction. On expansion, Expanding
Felt retains its passive insulation qualities,
which results in high thermal insulation
performance in fires.
- No smoke generation
in a fire. The expansion properties
are achieved without releasing smoke or
toxic fumes. The potential for smoke damage
to the building is therefore eliminated.
- Easy to use.
Supplied either in sheet form that can be
cut on site using a sharp knife or in pre-cut
strip form, Expanding Felt is convenient
to install. The small amount of binder results
in a flexible but very resilient product
that can be easily inserted into joint gaps.
- Inert.
The base material will not degrade over time
Health Aspects Summary
Firemaster 607 was designed
for enhanced solubility in lung tissues. Rats
have been exposed 6 hours a day, 5 days a week
during 2 years at an average concentration
of 200 F/ml (about 200 to 300 times higher
than the concentration found in production
plants) without showing any significant increase
in lung tumours or fibrosis.
Fire Protection Performance
Tested to AS 1530 pt 4 standard
(equivalent to BS 476 pt 20) in wall and roof
slab construction joints up to 100mm wide.
Tested in BS 476 pt 20 conditions
for joints in vertical walls and joints in
floors up to 150mm wide.Assessed by the Loss
Prevention Council for fire protection of expansion
joints.
